Pet Care Tips

When spring arrives and the weather starts to warm up, your pet may face a number of new challenges. The veterinary team at Avon Lake Animal Clinic and the grooming team at Polished Paws Salon & Boutique make it our priority to ensure that your pet is safe and ready for all the seasonal challenges it may encounter.

Yard Safety

Now’s the time to begin applying fertilizers, pre-emergent herbicides, and pesticides to the lawn and garden. It’s important to remember that these chemicals can be toxic for pets if consumed or inhaled. We recommend that you keep your pet off the lawn for 48 hours after application and utilize natural, pet-safe products whenever possible.

Parasite Prevention

While we recommend that pets stay on parasite prevention year-round, we understand that some pet owners stop using these products during the extreme cold of the winter. It is incredibly important for pets to be on heartworm, flea, and tick prevention regularly as soon as the temperature rises to over freezing. A thaw puts your pet at greater risk of exposure to these disease-transmitting parasites, making prevention essential.

Springtime Grooming

The snow is melting and your yard is likely wet and muddy. The thick undercoats of winter tend to hold moisture and mud obtained while your pet is playing in the yard. Now is the time to get a spring cleanup to remove the dead winter fur. Your pet will appreciate a bath and a fresh new look to welcome the new season. Remember, grooming is not always about a pet’s appearance; it can have health benefits to the skin and coat as well.

If you have any questions about your pet’s care, please contact our team today and we’ll be happy to help.
